The influencer auction

The UGC protest that was made to look organic on Television and Social Media

The protest looked organic on television.

That was the first lie.

Placards were professionally printed. Slogans were identical across cities…

Hashtags peaked simultaneously in Jaipur, Delhi, and Lucknow within twelve minutes of each other… an impossibility unless someone had paid for coordination….

Inside a Telegram group named “Education Resistance Cell”, the real instructions were being given on a daily basis….

Amplify aggressively. Don’t ask questions. Funds will be adjusted post-judgment..

No one knew who had written it. But everyone knew who it came from.

The Big Voices

At the top of the pyramid were two marquee influencers… let’s call them The Oracle and The Strategist.

They were veterans. Loud. Confident… Quoted by TV panels… Feared by bureaucrats… Worshipped by smaller creators who believed proximity to power meant protection….

The deal was simple..

Each high-reach tweet carried a fixed price…

₹50,000 per post…
₹1 lakh for a thread…
More for a video….

No receipts…
No contracts…
Just friends helping friends….

Below them sat a layer of mid-tier influencers… accounts with 10k–100k followers… They were promised smaller sums.

₹5,000 per tweet… ₹10,000 if you join the ground protest…. Expenses reimbursed… don’t worry…

And then came the bottom layer.

Students…
Activists…
Unemployed graduates…

They weren’t promised money.
They were promised visibility.

People started appearing as if summoned by ideology…
Water bottles were handed out….
Placards were distributed….

No one asked who paid…

Smaller influencers paid from their own pockets… printing posters, travelling, taking leave from work.. because they believed the reimbursement would come later….

Once the Supreme Court rules, they were told, everything will be settled….

It was a gamble…

Then the judgment came….

The protest collapsed overnight….

And something else happened quietly, surgically…

The Oracle posted a tweet:

I have never taken a single rupee from anyone.. Here is my bank account..

The Strategist followed within minutes….

Same tone….
Same message….
Same tactic….

They posted their bank details publicly.

Not to receive money.

To send a message….

See? No money ever came….

What they didn’t say was what mattered most.

Inside private groups, panic spread….

One mid-tier influencer typed..

Bro… I paid ₹18,000 from my pocket… You said it would be reimbursed…

Another replied…

Same here… I travelled overnight… Nothing came….

A third posted screenshots of old messages.. vague promises, half-sentences, voice notes that never mentioned exact amounts….

And then came the cruel twist…

The same big influencers who had promised payment now began crowdfunding.

Support independent voices…. We fight alone…. Send contributions…

The smaller influencers stared at their screens in disbelief…

They had funded the protest…
They had amplified the noise…
They showed up on the streets….

No one went public.

Why?

Because the ecosystem punishes whistleblowers faster than lies….

Call out the Oracle and you lose collaborations…
Expose the Strategist and you get shadow-banned….
Question the funding and you’re labelled anti-movement….

So the smaller influencers swallowed the loss…

₹3,000 here…
₹12,000 there….
₹25,000 gone….

The big names moved on.. to the next outrage, the next hashtag, the next monetised anger…

The protest was never about regulation.

It was about reach…

UGC was the trigger…
Money was the lubricant…
Influence was the commodity…

The loudest voices took no risk…
The smallest voices paid the price…

And when the dust settled, the narrative was rewritten..

We were never paid… We fought alone… Others are lying…

History, as always, would only remember the loudest tweets…

Not the empty wallets…
